Director, Renewable Energy & Energy Storage Development

Reporting to the Managing Director, Redevelopment, PowerTransitions is seeking an experienced developer to play a key role in the Company’s growth. This position will lead all aspects of the Company’s project and energy storage development strategy across multiple markets within the United States with a primary focus on MISO, SPP, NYISO, CAISO, and ISO-NE, for development of renewable power generation (solar and wind) facilities and BESS systems on and adjacent to these brownfield sites. 

 

 Position Duties:

  • To support the redevelopment and finance teams in the screening, modeling, financial analysis and securing of power facilities, leading to the implementation of renewable (e.g. solar) and energy storage (e.g. BESS), that support the company’s goals, objectives and strategy.

  • To develop processes, procedures, programs, Project Management Plans (PMP) and Project Execution Plans (PEP), in support of the development and execution of renewable and BESS projects.

  • To ensure extensive knowledge with all renewable and energy storage technologies, technical and commercial consultants, contractors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in the pursuit and implementation of new and active projects.

  • To be responsible for the project development team and execution resource planning, execution plans, schedules, budgets, studies, value planning and presentations that provide a clear understanding regarding renewable and BESS market conditions, project pursuit structuring and execution requirements.

  • To retain expertise and maintain proficiency in implementing all elements associated with project development: incl. off-take/power sales; interconnection (IX), transmission and wheeling; project commercial structuring, modeling and finance; government affairs and community relations; property leasing, acquisition and Right of Way (ROW); Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) execution; permitting, commercial structuring and contract formulation and negotiations; business and risk management; environmental and sustainable development; and QA/QC and safety.

  • To orally present, internally and externally, all elements required in the pursuit and execution of renewable and BESS projects and furthering the companies’ goals.

  • To coordinate with all departments and functions within the organization in support of successful evolution from redevelopment to renewable and BESS project implementation.

  • To achieve personal goals in support of achieving the companies’ goals and objectives.

Responsibilities Overview:

  • Develop and analyze complex information, including numerical analysis, present key conclusions and withstand challenges from internal and external stakeholders.

  • Provide required input data into the financial analysis/modeling to determine viability of project pursuits.

  • Support the organization, based on personal market knowledge, in the securing redevelopment project opportunities, relationships with customers, markets and strategic analysis.

  • Lead the renewable energy and energy storage project development execution and implementation strategy.

  • Lead regional teams of direct reports and coordinate with internal and external resources in support of identifying new greenfield project opportunities, and advance portfolio of projects through the development process into construction, with accountability for the implementation of processes and procedures, organizing and securing internal and external resources and staffing, implement training and execution compliance, budget and schedule.

  • Develop and manage the implementation of market, commercial and execution strategies for development projects.

  • Support the redevelopment team in responses to project solicitations, including consultant and teaming strategy, and the development of a win plan in support of selection.

  • Perform OEM, consultants and contractor outreach, in coordination with the members of the company.

  • Interface with customers, partners and stakeholders in support of project pursuit, development and execution.

  • Establish and maintain industry and community relationships to advance company’s project development strategy and goals.

  • Establish relationship zippering plans, internally and externally, in support of progressing project success.

  • Support the redevelopment team’s development of screening material in the go/no-go decision-making processes.

  • Develop and own the internal review process in the pursuit and implementation of development projects.

  • Develop and own the resource planning and hiring for the development organization.

  • Develop and own the process, procedures, planning, scheduling and budgeting processes in support of the project development process.

  • Develop and own the planning and procurement associated with all OEM, supplier and contractor services contracting, scheduling and EPC(M) pricing for all development projects.

  • Development of a Project Management Plan (PMP) and Project Execution Plan (PEP), in support of OEM equipment acquisition and project EPC(M) execution in the renewable and energy storage markets.

  • Develop the strategy and lead commercial and contractual agreement negotiations associated with project development, e.g. off-take/power sales; interconnection (IX), transmission and wheeling; project commercial structuring and finance; government affairs and community relations; property leasing, acquisition and Right of Way (ROW); Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC); permitting.

  • Assist in obtaining offtake agreements including pursuant to RFPs.

  • Develop and lead risk analysis (e.g. Risk Register) associated with project development and execution.

  • Provide leadership in the environmental and sustainable development, QA/QC and safety.

  • Monitor market developments and engage in policy and regulatory discussions to advance the company’s goals and objectives.

  • Working within the organizations planning processes, regularly update regional market analyses to support the company’s development strategy.

  • Support the redevelopment organizations project due diligence, strategy and financing, as required.

  • Work with legal in the structuring of commercial agreements in the securing and execution of projects.

  • Provide planning and commercial expertise in support of the engineering, procurement and construction of projects, as required.

  • Develop best practices and identify lessons learned to continuously improve company development processes.

  • Share experience and lessons learned, resulting from experience, in support of advancing the company’s success.

  • Ensure cooperation and collaboration with all company departments and functions.

  • Provide leadership within the organization, establish yourself as a role model to employees.

  • Actively coach and develop junior development team members.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance and/or engineering; Master’s degree preferred.

    Professional

  • At least 7 - 10 years’ of success in the development of renewable energy and energy storage projects.

  • Strong financial, business and commercial acumen required.

    Skills

  • Experience with development and execution of power projects, e.g. renewable energy (e.g. solar) and energy storage (e.g. BESS).

  • Basic understanding of financial modeling, providing input and analysis of project economics.

  • Expertise in the development of presentations and presenting.

  • Strong skills in oral presentation to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong multi-tasking, as work is performed across a portfolio of projects simultaneously.

  • Proactive interaction with stakeholders, subcontractors, OEMs, and vendors as needed.

  • Experience in the development of Project Management Plan (PMP), in support of OEM equipment acquisition and project EPC(M) execution.

  • Commercial agreement experience, e.g. facility purchase, property acquisition, PPA, transmission, interconnection, permits, etc.

  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; scheduling and resource loading programs, VBA and Macro programming skills preferred.

  • Ability to anticipate project and corporate needs and have ability to manage and progress work assignments independently; ability to multi-task effectively and prioritize work across several reporting lines under deadline.

  • Ability to work as part of complex, cross-functional team.

  • Ability to work directly with senior managers and relay concepts in a direct and impact-oriented manner.
