PowerTransitions Announces Plans to Develop $2.4 Billion, 200 MW Data Center Campus on Former Fossil Fuel Plant site in Kansas City, Kansas

New Quindaro Data Center Campus in Kansas City, Kansas expands PowerTransitions’ data center “powered land” pipeline of over $18 billion, 1.5GW of critical IT Data Center capacity

Houston, Texas – July 17, 2025 – PowerTransitions®, a leading independent power company specializing in the redevelopment of legacy power and industrial facilities, entered into an Option Purchase Agreement with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County / Kansas City, Kansas (UG) on May 9, 2025 for the purchase, demolition, abatement and redevelopment of the Quindaro Power Station in Kansas City, Kansas into a $2.4 billion, ~200MW (critical IT) Quindaro Data Center Campus on 66 acres.

Today’s announcement introduces PowerTransitions’ first data center project in Midwestern United States, complementing the Company’s portfolio of data center powered land projects across North America. With 100 MW of critical IT power available by mid-2027 (Phase 1) and direct access to an existing 161 kV switchyard and ample water supply on site, this site is a prime opportunity for a new data center campus in a fast-growing data center market.  Phase 2 will add another ~100 MW of critical IT power by mid-2029.

Jeremy Ash, General Manager of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU), the agency of the UG responsible for the Quindaro Power Station Site, said “PowerTransitions’ vision to demolish, abate and redevelop our former generation site aligns perfectly with Kansas City Board of Public Utilities’ commitment to supporting economic development in our community. We are proud to partner with PowerTransitions in this transformative project. The existing onsite switchyard and utility infrastructure provides an ideal foundation for the Quindaro Data Center Campus.”

Once fully developed, the Quindaro Data Center Campus will provide approximately 1,524,000 square feet of gross floor area, supporting liquid cooling compatibility and flexible build-to-suit configurations for cloud based and generative AI-focused customers.

“PowerTransitions was founded with the vision of giving new life to legacy energy infrastructure. The Quindaro Data Center Campus perfectly embodies this mission,” said Sean Long, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PowerTransitions. “We are thrilled to work closely with the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities and the Unified Government to contribute to the economic growth of Kansas City.  Power Transitions’ core values include being a trusted partner in every community where we operate. In Kansas City, we are committed to investing our time and resources in the betterment of the community. This project is designed to provide substantial job creation, tax and other economic benefits to Kansas City.”

The State of Kansas adopted legislation earlier in April of this year that will provide sales tax incentives for data center developments in the State.  The final design of the data center campus will be developed in collaboration with an end-user data center company to provide a combination of AI and cloud computing.

The execution of the Option Purchase Agreement with the UG represents the culmination of PowerTransitions’ response to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued in 2023 by BPU. PowerTransitions was chosen by BPU for its innovative approach, working closely with KCBPU, to demolish, abate, and redevelop the site.
